A little blackpool history Lesson
The history of Blackpool is full of hidden gems. During the 18th century, people discovered the benefits of visiting the seaside. The fresh, clean air and a dip in the saltwater were known to have significant health benefits. The little hamlet of Blackpool, with its beautiful sandy beaches, became a place to enjoy and soak up these benefits. Thus, the resort of Blackpool was born.
Over time, hotels were built, and the extension of the railway to Blackpool from historic Poulton-le-Fylde brought visitors flocking by the thousands.
Blackpool holds the distinction of being the first town in the world to have electric streetlights. These lined the promenade and were the forerunners of the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations. It also boasted one of the first electric theatres, the Grand Theatre, which hosted performances by the biggest names of the time.
When you think of Blackpool, the first image that likely comes to mind is Blackpool Tower. Completed in 1894, the tower remains an iconic part of British culture and history. In its day, it was the tallest structure in Britain, with its design inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
The year after Blackpool Tower was completed, one of the world’s first electric tramways was introduced. These trams still operate today, running from the port town of Fleetwood along the coast through Cleveleys, into Blackpool, and beyond.
Recently, the tram route was extended to a new station located alongside the main Blackpool North Train Station. With train routes from across the country, rail travel has become a popular way to reach Blackpool.
King Edward Avenue
With all of Blackpool’s rich history and its world-famous attractions, you might think there’s no more history to uncover.
However, Hotel Claytou is situated on a historic street. King Edward Avenue, Blackpool, was the birthplace of William Walmsley. Who’s that, you ask?
William Walmsley was the founder of Swallow Sidecars, which later became Jaguar Cars. Swallow Cars was also located on King Edward Avenue.
The road boasts some of the oldest hotels in Blackpool and offers a diverse range of accommodations.
It even used to house a picture house, though sadly, it no longer exists.
